I find gems of wisdom among the obituaries in my local paper.
Vincent Burke (R.I.P.) was a notable TV and film producer, operating out of New Zealand. He created a string of films which he needed to sell to international buyers. Hence he made regular trips to LA, London, Cannes etc.
Here’s his first bit of Kiwi wisdom. Go where the film buyers hang out. Take Cannes for example. In time he would bump into a prospective big-wallet film buyer on the Cannes promenade.
Burke had earned the reputation “Have-a-meal-and-do-a-deal”. All around him are high-priced restaurants.
“John, great to see you. I’ve got something exciting for you to consider. Please join me for lunch/dinner at my favourite little restaurant: La Brouette. It’s just around the corner.”
Wisdom #2: He had already sussed out a selection of presentable but low-budget restaurants in side streets near the Cannes Promenade. He would have breakfast etc at each place so they knew him by sight.
Sometimes two breakfasts in one day, so he became known as a good tipper.
Then he would invite his guest to lunch or dinner. He was always taken to his favourite table in a quiet corner where they could talk.
Burke’s reputation for: “Have-a-meal-and-do-a-deal” shows the merit in doing his groundwork before he went to work.
What a great start, Brian. I'm looking forward to reading many more.
A friend who sold life insurance shared his success secret with me. TWO lunch appointments each day. 12-1 and 1-2. To avoid putting on excess weight he would have a boiled egg salad at one and a salmon salad at his second lunch. Each guest was “trapped” for an hour. Naturally all four lunches were a business expense. He sold a LOT of insurance!
